Polystyrene and the styrene-butadience plastics

have widely been used in food packaging industry for many years. They are particualrly transformed into trays and containers.
The polymers themselves can come into direct contact with foods since they are compliant with the relevant EU directives on plastics which can contact food.

There are actually two types of polystyrene trays which are based on two plastics.
Crystal polystyrene is used because of its transparency mainly in confectionairy.
On the other hand, we have foamed polystyrene which is thermoformed into various kinds of trays. Foamed polystyrene trays act as containers for eggs, fast-foods, poultry, fish, fruit and vegetables. Sometimes foamed polystyrene is laminated with EVOH to adjust the containers to modified atmosphere packaging (barrier foam trays).

Why PLASTIC food packaging?

Well, that's a difficult question.I know that environmentalists are fed ud with companies like ours, but they never seem to care about food spoilage. Do you know that 50% of world's food goes bad because of inappropriate packaging systems? I agree, there are some packaging materials safe for the environmet, but there are not many of them on the market. There might some developing projects on eco-friendly bags, however they're still in labs.
Whenever you buy a biodagradable bag, please bear in mind that as a matter of fact it will degrade into plastic granule, the bag is gone but the material remains.

Still, there is some hope like PLA trays which are being implemented by our company in different meat processing plants.Check out our website for details.
